Church of England Vision - One reflection, from my Church of England Professional Qualification in Headship, that I have brought back to school with me to share with the staff and children, is this quote from the Church of England’s Vision for Education:
Joy in learning is a mark of the good teacher and the well-taught pupil. The Book of Proverbs (8:30-31) poetically imagines wisdom playing before God at creation. Play and playfulness are part of a full life, and any education that does not communicate joy, wonder, amazement, fascination and delight has failed.
I thought this was such a powerful statement and something which I challenge our school to live by, along with our own vision.

Environmental Tutor - Bugthorpe and Sutton Upon Derwent Church of England Primary Schools employ, and share, an Environmental Tutor, who delivers Forest Schools and Gardening sessions each week. Each class in school has weekly/fortnightly sessions to work and learn outdoors in our fantastic outdoor spaces. It is important for each child in school to have a pair of wellies as part of their uniform so that they can enjoy learning in our ‘Forest School’.
Throughout the year, the children grow produce to sell on to our parents to raise money for extra gardening resources; each class has a vegetable plot and we have growing competitions.
Elements of the Science curriculum are covered by our Environmental Tutor, e.g. Plants and Living Things and their Habitats.

Knowledge Mats - We have introduced mini quizzes in Classes 2, 3 and 4 linked to the children’s knowledge mats (these are sent home at the start of a new topic each half term). These will be marked by the children themselves (and scores will not be shared) – an opportunity to self-assess what they have learnt about their new topic. The quizzes will be used to promote the building of ‘sticky knowledge’ and vocabulary. Some example questions for Year 3/4 from the knowledge mat on rivers would be:
What is the start of a river called? What is the longest river in the world? What does meander mean?

Our New ‘Focus’ Curriculum - There are many Educational Advisors out there, but we are inspired by the late Sir Ken Robinson. He promoted creativity, and excited children with their hand up, engaged in learning a broad curriculum. Being led by the pupils, but harnessing their imaginations through topics to cover the National Curriculum. We very passionate about enquiry-based learning, where the children are exposed to questions, and encouraged to ask questions themselves that we can investigate further too. We will be using Focus Education as our main driver. This scheme covers topics through key questions e.g. Y5/6 – What would a journey through your body be like? We will approach our topics in a very cross-curricular way, linking lots of subjects together to embed knowledge and skills. Staff are excited to take this new approach on board, and we are more than confident that all of the children will flourish and be inspired to achieve their full potential. Linking with certain topics, you will be sent home a ‘knowledge mat’. This will provide you with the key vocabulary and ‘sticky knowledge’ that the children need to learn for their topic – a useful tool to support your child with learning at home. Each class study a new topic each half term and we hope to link our school trips to these too, throughout the year.

Our School Vision - A school’s vision is integral to the running of a Church of England School. It answers who we are, and how we live. The way I explain it to the children is using a ‘bus’ analogy. I am the bus driver and the children who attend our schools get on the bus. It is an amazing bus with reclining chairs and foot spas etc! Our vision is lived out on the bus journey, and when the children leave the bus to go to secondary school, they leave with our vision – guiding them through life and contributing positively to society. We have worked hard to think carefully about what makes each school unique and how we should live as a church school.

PTFA - The Parent Teacher Friends Association organise and run events throughout the school year to raise funds for school. During my first year as Executive Headteacher, 2019-2020, Sutton's PTFA donated a whopping £6000 towards the building of our school library, that is situated on our playground. They are always full of creative ways to fundraise and we cannot thank them enough for all their efforts and dedication to making school a better place for every child.

Pupil Voice - Another huge success at our school, has been our pupils standing up for what they believe in. We have Team Point teams, with Captains, Vice Captains and Sports Ambassadors. The pupils have regularly given their ‘Pupil Voice’ to help us move forward together. They have created their own lunchtime clubs such as ‘Debate Club’ and ‘Singing Club’ and the Sports Ambassadors have run their own lunchtime sports, which the full school have taken part in. They have really grown in confidence and have taken on board their roles and responsibilities.

Seesaw – In 2020, during the Coronavirus Pandemic, we launched Seesaw to our school communities. In the Early Years, we use Tapestry to communicate with parents. Seesaw is our new tool for communicating with Years 1 to 6. It has been a fantastic resource for uploading home learning during Lockdown; teachers have been able to set and mark work, offering feedback to children as well as communicating with parents who have been teaching at home.
Currently, we use Seesaw in the classroom, where the children are able to take photos of their work and share it with their parents to answer ‘how was school today? What did you learn?’ questions at the dinner table. It is also a great resource to film and share progress in lessons like PE.
During National Lockdown, 2020, thousands of pieces of work and comments were submitted over the months spent at home, and the children appreciated that daily contact with their teachers.

Tapestry – In Class 1, our Nursery and Early Years provision, we use Tapestry as our assessment and communication tool with parents. Observations are uploaded by staff to share with parents at home so that you can see what progress your child is making. You can also upload observations at home of what you’ve been up to. These are really useful in building up a picture of your child. This also helps with child-initiated learning; staff can change our planning and provision to match the children’s interests e.g. if your child has been on a museum visit at the weekend etc.

Team Challenge Days – This is a day when all teachers prepare a session based around a subject area we choose to focus on, and throughout the day, the children move around the four activities in their team point teams Badgers, Squirrels, Owls and Hedgehogs.
For example: We held an RE Team Challenge Day with a focus on learning Bible Stories. One group, built Noah's Ark to fit the whole group in, using all the resources in the Early Years classroom; Daniel and the Lion's Den involved building with Lego; Jonah and the Whale was told by making a representation of Jonah and the Whale using a peg and artistic skills; David and Goliath was recreated, and brought to life, through role play and drama. Our children love Team Challenge Days!
Team Challenge Days are all about learning vital skills in communication, supporting others, problem solving and building relationships. Future Team Challenge Days may focus on Science, PE or Art etc. and they help compliment a broad and balanced curriculum, as well as building a togetherness across the school.

Team Points - The whole school (including Nursery children) are divided into 4 teams – Badgers, Squirrels, Owls and Hedgehogs.
Children are given team points for behaviour, hard work, attitude, manners and effort. When a child gets to 10 team points they receive a ‘Rose Globe’ stamp. When they get to 20 ‘Rose Globe’ stamps they receive a bronze Yorkshire Rose badge to wear with pride on their school uniform. As they progress through school they will work towards their silver and gold Yorkshire Rose badges!
The Team Captains have meetings with the Executive Headteacher to discuss school life and offer their 'Pupil Voice'. They will also encourage their team throughout school and lead by example.
The Vice Captains collect the running totals of the team points in each class (each week) and the team with the most team points (in a week) will win a tally on the graph. The team with the most wins in a term will receive a team prize! We will ask ‘Pupil Voice’ for their opinions of team prizes but examples from the past include DVDs, extra sports, extended playtime or craft activities etc.
Sports Ambassadors help to organise Sports Day. They also work together to organise and run sporting lunchtime activities for the whole school including ‘Krazy Kilometre’ and coaching sessions.

Together we are Stronger - We worked closely with Bugthorpe CE Primary School, sharing an Executive Headteacher, Business Manager and Senco. We also have the same inspiring curriculum, which means staff can share resources and planning, as well as moderate work.
How do we further develop the links between our small schools?
Inter-school competitions and sporting events.
• Classes using video conferencing to discuss topics across both schools.
• Educational Visits and Residentials together as we are following the same Focus Curriculum.
• Transition activities for Year 6 pupils from both schools so they can get together and build friendships before going off to Secondary School.
• Shared Collective Worship virtually, where all the classes across both schools can see each other and share ideas.

ELSAs are specialist Teaching Assistants who have been trained to support children with emotional difficulties. We provide children with a quiet place to explore difficult feelings.

We aim to build a strong relationship with the children and provide them with a safe and comfortable environment to explore their feelings and to share honestly.
